Mission

The Community School is a private non-sectarian co-educational day school serving 30 students in grades 6 to 12. Our students are bright, highly motivated young people from 15 towns in central New Hampshire and western Maine.

We believe learning is a rigorous and joyful pursuit which calls on each individual's talents and interests, and promotes appreciation of the interconnectedness of people and places. At The Community School, our mission is to support students on their individual learning paths within a caring and respectful community.

Admissions Visits Q & A

How long is a typical visit?
Some students like to visit for half a day; others pack a lunch and come for the whole day.

What will happen when I visit?
After meeting with the director or the admissions counselor, a student guide will take you around the school and help you feel at home.  Generally you will have an opportunity to peek into several classes in progress.  A student on the Admissions Committee will be your “point person” for your visit day.

Will I be able to participate in a class?
Absolutely!  Core classes are in the morning; block classes are in the afternoon.

What afternoon block classes can I choose from?
Block I classes (start date:  Sept. 8) – Harvest:  Local and Global Issues, One Hundred Years of Genocide, and The Scope of Science; Block II classes (start date: Nov.30) – Theater; Block III classes (start date:  Jan. 4)–Religion and the Middle East, Wars and Peace in the 20th Century, and Lab Science; Block IV classes (start date:  Mar. 1)– Art and Design with Computers, The Jim Crow Era, and Forestry; and Block V (start date:  May 3)–Garden, History of Environmentalism, and Monitoring Climate Change.

Should my parents plan to stay with me for they whole day?
Although parents are always welcome to sit in on classes at The Community School, you and your parents should discuss what would make you feel most comfortable. Many parents plan ahead to leave during class time, returning at the end of the day.
